Frequently Asked Questions

What is Xtend?

Xtend is the ultimate sugar-free, BCAA-containing drink mix to be consumed intra-workout (during exercise.) Whether you’re a physique athlete, strongman, powerlifter, traditional athlete (e.g., football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc), endurance competitor, or just looking to significantly change your body composition through resistance training and nutrition, Xtend is ideally formulated to maximize training intensity and support your goals. Xtend was the first and has become the most well-recognized and most widely-used used intra-workout catalyst product because it not only works but it tastes great too!

What is in Xtend?

Xtend is commonly thought of as simply a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplement, but that is like saying a Navy SEAL is a sailor who can swim really well. There's so much more to the story. Xtend contains:

  • BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, and valine,) in a research validated 2:1:1 ratio to stimulate and support muscle protein synthesis and provide metabolic energy while you train.*
  • Glutamine to promote muscle intracellular BCAA metabolism down the correct energy and protein synthesis pathways via the BCAA aminotransferase enzyme.*
  • Vitamin B6 to ensure optimal BCAA aminotransferase reactions.*
  • Bonded Citrulline Malate to help facilitate rapid ATP turnover and lactate re-absorption to support higher training volumes at a given exercise intensity.*
  • Electrolytes (potassium, chloride and sodium) to optimize cell hydration and muscle contractile function while you train even under the most brutal of conditions.*

Who should use Xtend?

Xtend is designed to be effective for anyone — male or female — who wants to perform at their best, from competitive athletes to those serious about changing their physique. Though ideal for strength training or bodybuilding (especially those on low-carb diets,) Xtend can also be used very effectively in a “bulking phase” or by endurance athletes during training and competition. Xtend works whether it’s used as formulated and indicated, or whether you choose to combine Xtend with supplemental carbohydrates based upon performance needs and duration.*

What results will I achieve from using Xtend?

Two clinical studies support the effective use of Xtend, when combined with exercise.

Xtend Increased Lean Body Mass by 2x MORE than Whey Protein and 3x MORE than Carbohydrates in just 8 weeks!*

Xtend Decreased Body Fat by 2x MORE than Whey Protein and 3x MORE than Carbohydrates in just 8 weeks!*

How does Xtend work?

Xtend is formulated with a precise PentActive blend of key ingredients, synergistically involved in cellular processes to optimize muscle performance and response:*

  • Stage 1: 7000 mg of BCAAs, in a 2:1:1 ratio of Leucine:Isoleucine:Valine is used to provide metabolic energy while you train, as well as to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.*
  • Stage 2: 2500 mg of Glutamine is used to increase extracellular concentrations of Glutamine, which helps to promote muscle intracellular BCAA metabolism down the correct energy and protein synthesis pathways via the BCAA aminotransferase enzyme.*
  • Stage 3: 640 mcg of Vitamin B6 serves as the rate-limiting cofactor involved in optimal BCAA aminotransferase reactions.*
  • Stage 4: 1000 mg of Citrulline Malate help support rapid ATP turnover and lactate re-absorption to support higher training volumes at a given exercise intensity. Citrulline also serves as a secondary signal to stimulate muscle protein synthesis, most likely arising from its ability to promote increased blood flow via increase nitric oxide (NO) and/or improving the energy state of a cell by promoting lactate re-absorption.*
  • Stage 5: 1171 mg of an extensively studied Electrolyte blend, consisting of Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate, Potassium Chloride, and Sodium Chloride, help to optimize muscle contractile function and promote cell hydration under the most brutal of conditions.*

How fast will I see results from using Xtend?

Most Xtend users report an immediate response during training. Variables such as training volume, reduced fatigue, and increased muscular endurance and power output are common to first-time Xtend users.*

For body composition and strength changes, Xtend studies support significant improvements in as little as eight weeks.*

When's the best time to consume Xtend?

Two university studies confirm that Xtend is significantly effective at increasing muscle mass and strength, and reducing body fat when consumed during exercise or immediately prior to and after training.*

It’s recommended that you begin consuming Xtend immediately before your workout, and continue sipping on Xtend throughout your training or competition. Many users also report significantly improved gains when Xtend is consumed first thing in the morning and sipped on throughout the day.

How much Xtend should I consume for it to be most effective?

For best mixing results and taste, pour eight fluid ounces of filtered water into a shaker cup. Add 1 scoop of Xtend. Close the shaker cup and swirl to create a vortex effect and draw the Xtend powder into the liquid. Once the Xtend powder has fallen into solution, shake vigorously for about 25 shakes. For endurance athletes who may add Xtend to their hydration pack, it’s recommended that Xtend be mixed in a shaker cup or pitcher and then poured into the backpack. (Mixing directly within the bladder of the hydration pack may cause the tubing to become blocked). NOTE: If you find that some of the BCAA material settles at the bottom of the shaker cup, you may not have used the correct dilution ratio of 1 scoop of Xtend per eight ounces of water.

How does Xtend compare to other products?

In both eight-week and 10-week clinical trials, Xtend has significantly outperformed Whey Protein, Carbohydrates and a 4:1 (Carb-to-Protein) sports beverage on measures of lean body mass, body fat, upper- and lower-body muscular endurance, and upper- and lower-body strength.*

No other product on the market even comes close! Competitive products are either under-dosed, contain irrelevant ingredients that are included for label effect rather than any physiological reason, or are so ignorantly formulated as to make on wonder what species of animal the company believes is buying their product. During exercise beverages for the endurance world, on the other hand, still depend too heavily on simple carbohydrates or low doses of whey protein concentrate that yield only a fraction of the key amino acids and introduce unnecessary lactose and fat into a high-performance environment.*

If I already eat a lot of protein, will additional free-form BCAA be beneficial to me?

The metabolic effects seen from ingesting free-form amino acids are different from ingesting the same amino acids when they are in a whole protein (peptide bond). The rapid flushing of the system with the particular amino acid exerts a much more powerful activation of its target pathways. For example, if you were to ingest 5 grams of free-form arginine pre-workout you would notice a greater pump then without it. If you were to ingest 5 grams of arginine in the form of a whole protein (1) you'd have to eat a ton of protein to acquire the 5 grams of arginine and (2) the rate of delivery would be much slower and (3) you would not be flooding your system with a large dose of arginine at one time. The same holds true for BCAA. Ingesting 10 grams of BCAA will lead to greater activation of mTOR, PI3K, etc. than ingesting 10 grams of BCAA from a whole protein.*

What if I already take in a lot of whey protein which is high in BCAA?

Free-form amino acids are absorbed quicker than whey, and as stated above, whey will not flood your bloodstream with BCAA as quick as ingesting free-form BCAA. The BCAA from whey compared to free-form BCAA could be compared to filling up a glass of water from a garden hose (whey) to a faucet (free-form BCAA). If you use a garden hose you have to wait until the water travels the length of the hose before you can use it. With a faucet, the water is right there when you turn it on. On top of this, the faucet has a wider opening than the garden hose and releases more water than the garden hose. During your workout and times of stress (dieting), you want the BCAA to get to your muscles as quickly as possible.*

I have heard one can get the same effects from taking Leucine alone as from taking all 3 BCAA, is this true?

Due to leucine's metabolic properties, many people focus solely on leucine and not the other two BCAAs, valine and isoleucine. Research has shown that leucine-rich diets or administration of leucine alone lead to decreases in valine and isoleucine plasma concentrations and a BCAA imbalance (Shirmomura et al., 2004). While it may be cheaper to supplement with leucine alone instead of all three BCAA, one should supplement with all three BCAAs so not to create a BCAA imbalance. Isoleucine and Valine also has some interesting properties of their own, separate from leucine. Isoleucine has been shown to increase glucose intake via PI3K activation, one of the same pathways leucine uses, but independently of the mTOR pathway (Doi et al., 2003). Valine has been shown to reduce fatty acid synthase in adipocytes by 40%, which will lead to less fat storage (Taylor & Halperin, 1975).

Will the sodium content in the new Xtend make me look bloated and flat?

No it won’t. Sodium has been given a bad rap in the fitness community. Online forums are frequently atwitter about how sodium will immediately obscure your hard-earned muscles with excess water and bloat. While that might be the case if you suck down a large pizza, the relatively small amount of sodium per serving of Xtend isn’t going to camouflage your shoulder striations. Studies have shown that people can lose up to 1,800 mg of sodium in a liter of sweat. You could have seven servings of Xtend a day and still not replace that amount.

Even serious competitors don’t need to avoid salt until just a few days before their event. In fact, some research suggests that following a chronically low-sodium diet makes it harder to achieve that ripped look when the sodium finally is eliminated before a contest.

The fact is, Xtend contains the correct ratio of electrolytes to help you train intensely and recovery properly. And it’s training and recovery — not counting grains of salt — that’s going to build you the body that you want.*

What Supplements Can I Combine with Xtend for Enhanced Results?

The Mammalian Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) is one of the body's protein synthesis regulators. mTOR functions as an energy sensor; it is activated when ATP levels are high and blocked when ATP levels are decreased (AMPK is activated when ATP decreases, which works antagonistically to mTOR). The main energy-consuming process in the cell is protein synthesis. When mTOR is activated (high ATP levels sensed) protein synthesis is increased and when mTOR is suppressed (low ATP levels are sensed) protein synthesis is blunted. MTOR activation is vital for skeletal muscle hypertrophy. Interestingly, mTOR is also a nutrient sensor of amino acid availability, specifically of leucine availability. Research has shown that regulation of mTOR by ATP and amino acids act independently through separate mechanisms (Dennis et al., 2001). It is my belief that combining supplements that increase/elevate ATP levels with BCAA will lead to an increased activation of mTOR, and therefore protein synthesis. Our goal is to keep ATP levels elevated while working out. To do so, we must supply the needed nutrients and substrates before and after the workout to keep ATP levels elevated and our bodies primed for growth.*

Creatine - Creatine is used in the high-energy phosphate or ATP-PCr system to regenerate ATP. ATP, the body's main source of energy, is a molecule of adenosine (adenine + the sugar ribose) linked to three phosphate molecules by high-energy bonds. Breaking of the two outer bonds results in the release of energy. When the most outer bond is broken, the energy is released and ADP and Pi are left behind. Creatine, which is bonded to a phosphate ion, transfers energy to the ADP and Pi molecule by breaking its own bond. This regenerates the ATP molecule, which means one now has more energy to use. Skeletal muscle has a limited storage of creatine. Therefore supplementing with creatine increases your ability to form ATP and therefore increases the available energy for exercise (Casey et al. 1996 & 2000). More importantly to our topic on hand, by keeping ATP levels by supplementing with creatine we increase protein synthesis through mTOR activation. Creatine also has many other beneficial effects that are to numerous to address here.*

Nitric Oxide (NO) product (Arginine, DiArginine-Malate, AAKG, etc) - The rate-limiting step of amino acid uptake into skeletal muscle is the transportation of the amino acids through the blood to the skeletal muscle, which is governed by blood flow (Wolfe, 2004). NO vasodilates blood vessels, thereby increasing blood flow. This increase when combined with exercises means greater blood flow and greater amino acid deliver and uptake in the working skeletal muscle. Exercise itself results in an increase in NO production, and the increased blood flow created by exercise is believed to be linked to the increase in protein synthesis post workout (Douglas et al., 2004). Xtend already has Citrulline-Malate in it, which will increase NO production, but an additional serving of arginine (i.e. 5 grams) preworkout should further enhance NO production, blood flow, and amino acid uptake.*

Are there any other products that will help improve the results I achieve when using Xtend?

Xtend was formulated, and then recently reformulated to remove the need for additional ingredients while you train or compete. However, Xtend was explicitly designed to contain no carbohydrates or sugar so that you could dictate how you may want to manipulate your carbohydrate needs based upon your training cycle or duration. Therefore, when carbohydrates are desired, combine Xtend with up to 0.45g of carbohydrate per pound of bodyweight, per hour of exercise. When carbohydrates are added, increase the amount of water used per serving so that the finished formula concentration is easily digested during exercise.*

Do I have to take Xtend on off days?

No it is not necessary to take Xtend on off days, though doing so will enhance your recovery. The most important time to take Xtend is during training.

Is Xtend safe?

Not only do each of the individual ingredients used in Xtend have an incredibly high dosing threshold and many years of validated clinical trials to support safety across a wide range of consumers, but Xtend did not adversely affect any measures of safety in either of the two clinical studies in which it was used chronically and at high doses for up to 10 weeks. Additionally, each batch of Xtend undergoes rigorous quality assurance and analytical testing to validate ingredient purity and potency, and is blended and packaged in an NSF for Sport® certified facility to ensure no banned substances are inadvertently introduced into the manufacturing process during production.

Can I overdose on Xtend?

It really is not possible to overdose Xtend.

Can I take Xtend with meals?

Yes, that is perfectly fine.

Will Xtend cause me to fail a drug test for natural bodybuilding competitions?

No. Xtend contains all natural ingredients and no hormones. It will not cause you to fail a drug test
